Golfing The 3G Way

Mention of 3G in an era of 5G and upcoming 6G? Sounds obsolete!
Well, we are talking of another 3G! Three generations golfing together. Now what do you say?
Ghumakkad has been blessed to play a round of golf- the 3G way. It was in California in the summer of 2025 that my grandson, son-in-law and I played together for the first time. You may browse the following picture story to feel that first-time excitement.

3G Again
The 3G Way happened again in June 2026, and this time in India. We were fortunate to play together. And our 11-year-old grandson also joined us in Secunderabad. Sharing below few pictures of 3G-golfing.

Fellow golfers in India would know that we can afford the luxury of a caddie. Hiring a caddie on golf courses abroad costs a bomb. On a scorching summer afternoon, we had to protect Naman with a golf umbrella.

But with the windy conditions, he found it difficult to handle the large umbrella. His caddie offered to hold the umbrella as well. See the short video below courtesy Ankur .

Our eldest grandson Ansh, who goes to IIM Shillong later this week and is not an early riser, also joined us for a nine-holes walk the next day. That is the power of golf! Few more pictures below.

The 3G Way continued in Secunderabad for the next 5 days! Sharing few more pictures.

Time to thank our caddies!

If you are a golfer too, do share your experience and the thrill of 3G golfing!

Why Do People Play Golf?
For exercising, keeping fit, making friends etc? None of that. Ghumakkad has a different take. Read the story below.
Why I Love Golfing? - Because of the greenery, flora and fauna on a golf course. Unpolluted air, variety of trees, shrubs, flowers, changing seasons-- all of it makes golfing a treat!
After a trans-continental flight, you can fight the jet lag with a round of golf. And if you fire a hole-in-one, you forget the jet-lag all together! The picture story linked below recreates the excitement.

Rolling Pin and Golf Club - Is there a similarity? And does it help you win a woman's heart?

Golf and Yoga - So much alike. Ghumakkad unearths how?
Thank God Its Monday - Why do the Veteran golfers love Mondays?

You are Never Too Old for Golf - Addiction at 85? Yes, teeing off in the darkness.

Hope you saw how golf encompasses so many facets of our life. If you are a golfer, cheers! If you are not, it is never too late to start golfing.

Golfing in California

'Golfer from Secunderabad, India. Looking for golfing partner in Pleasanton, California.'

Like the matrimony ads, Ghumakkad did not have to place such an ad on golfing sites! Because his threesome was already made! Yes, it was such a delight to be golfing in California with Ankur our son-in-law and Nikhil, our grandson.

We played at a public course, Las Positas Golf Club, Livermore. The greens were top class. Fairways were also used by FootGolf where two people play to hole the football on a different green with a 21-inch hole. Sharing few pictures. We had the company of Bar headed geese and a Deer on the course. Weather was clear with strong breeze. Although a nine-hole course having all par-three holes, it wasn't a cakewalk. I could make only three Pars.

Let the pictures tell their stories.

Teenager Nikhil, who enters the University shortly, would not walk but run on the golf course. If reminded me of 1989, when I started golf at US Club in Bombay. Being a regular jogger, I used to run between the holes. Nikhil had the company of bar headed geese.  See the pictures below.

Ankur on the 2nd Green.

See the flag in the foreground of the picture below. The cup size is larger for the soccer ball to be holed. Golf green is in upper right of the picture.

A close up of our surprise visitor.

Golfers are always a happy lot specially when they ride a Cyber Truck!

Thanks for browsing.
More from California coming up.

Hand-me-Ups

Hand-me-ups. Ever heard of that?
Hand-me-downs is OK. All of us have worn some hand-me-downs from our elder brother or sister or some times even from our parents who had a knack of preserving old clothes and sweaters. Many times we were fed up of wearing the hand-me-downs specially if you were the youngest of the siblings!
But what on earth is this hand-me-up?

Ghumakkad thought that he had invented the hand-me-up. But Collins dictionary beat me to it. Hand-me-up happens when the next generation hands over something which is of no use to them any longer.  The dictionary defines hand-me-ups as those tech gadgets which the younger generation doesn't need anymore. They then hand over such gadgets (like old models of cellphones) to their parents or grandparents to start using it.

Ghumakkad of course experienced the hand-me-up on a different note. My grandson Ansh as he grows taller everyday, soon overgrew his sports shoes.
Recently on a visit to Chennai when I did not carry my walking shoes, my grandson's shoes fitted me perfectly. Since he could use it no longer I got this hand-me-up as a gift. In perfect condition, all I had to do was wash the laces and just clean the shoes. And bingo, I had a new pair of shoes!

Ansh I am thankful to you for this lovely hand-me-up.

You can see the rate at which teenagers grow in this age. Ansh will be fourteen this June.
Here is another picture when Ansh was younger and both of us can be seen enjoying each other's company in Srisailam on a rainy day.

I have also had hand-me-ups coming from my son Ankush. Some of his long kurtas which he did not like much came readily to me as hand-me-up. Of course the bottom line remains: you have to fit into a hand-me-up! Not vice versa!

So all you folks out there who are grandpas already, prepare to accept hand-me-ups. And those who are not yet grandpas: await your turn.

Your experiences of hand-me-ups are welcome.

Thanks for browsing.
