World Creativity and Innovation Day

Can you learn to be creative?
And innovative?
Who can teach you creativity and innovation?
Schools, colleges?
Nature also teaches you creativity!

How?
Look at this picture taken in Jaipur the Pink City, India where Nature painted the sky pink at dawn!

Or, this wild grass twirling in a creative pattern?
Or, a raindrop perched on a leaf and teach us about entrepreneurship.

Or, the morning mist which has a life lesson for all of us!
Nature is our best teacher.

Here is wishing all our readers a very happy WCID- World Creativity and Innovation Day. May you be more creative and innovative in whatever you do. Rural Jugaad

Jaipur never stops surprising me.

While in Jaipur last week, a  vendor selling fresh sugarcane juice came selling door to door.
His machine was neither hand-driven nor electric-powered. Then how did it work? And how did he move it door to door, colony to colony?

Answer lies in 'Jugaad'  जुगाड़ -- meaning innovation based on local needs.
His vehicle was driven by an agriculture pump installed on a platform. When not in motion, it powered the sugarcane crusher. Simple. Unfortunately I could not take a picture. What I could get from the net courtesy www.carwale.com is this:

The foot pedal on bottom right enables forward movement of the platform. No driving license required.

Impressed? And his pricing was competitive too. Rs 10 for a glass with ice or Rs 12 a glass without ice! Amazing!
This is real India.

The machine was made in Rajkot Gujarat and deployed in Rajasthan.

Jaipur is a blend of old and the new. The city does have a changing face. Those who have seen it in 1970s-90s will find a change. If you wish to browse the previous post on the Pink City please click the link below:

Golf Umbrella for Plant Protection

___________________ Golf Umbrella for Plant Protection ___________________

Ever seen a golfer using his golf umbrella to protect a flowering plant? Read on.

With temperatures soaring to 44 degrees Celsius and more in Hyderabad thus summer, it was a challenge to keep the garden green. Potted plants are easy to protect from intense heat. Shift them to a shaded area and water it twice. Simple.

But what about plants in flower beds? We have to erect a temporary structure to provide sun shade. That requires fabrication. Needs some 'bandobust' as we call it in the Fauz! In the meanwhile, the plants were wilting in the Sun. See the pictures below:

Heat was increasing and time was running out. Eureka!
I dashed for my golf umbrella and covered the plant! See the picture below.

Now don't get ideas! This is not another poster for the recent Hindi film 'Aashiqui-2'!

And the beauty of this arrangement is-- once the Sun goes down, fold the umbrella and let the plant be bathed in a water spray. Next day, put the umbrella back!

Jugaad-- what they say! Necessity is the mother of ....!

Take care of your plants in the summer as much as we take care of ourselves!
Happy gardening!

Saurashtra ki sair Part-1: Innovation and Rural Wisdom

____ Saurashtra ki Sair Part-1: Innovation and Rural Wisdom ___

Neeta and I travelled across Saurashtra, Gujarat from 26th Jan to 5th Feb 2013.

The first part posted here covers the train journey from Secunderabad (AP) to Rajkot. From south central India going west via Pune, the train touches the west coast of India at Vasai Road and then on to Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad and finally further west to Rajkot.

This picture story chronicles some day-to-day innovation and rural wisdom as observed from the train. We also noticed the degree of pollution caused by mankind. Double click a picture to enlarge it.

Read on and share your comments.

From Rajkot, we drove to Junagadh. It was one of the princely states in Saurashtra before 1947.
More on it in Part-2 of our 'Saurashtra ki Sair'

Do leave your comments/suggestions.
