Kuntala Waterfalls- Monsoon Getaway

Waterfalls pep you up. Be it a small or big waterfall, perennial or monsoon-driven, the thrill and excitement is the same. For four senior citizens from Hyderabad in the age group of 64 to 73 years, it was a fun outing though a bit tiring!
Located 260 kms north of Hyderabad, it is a four-hour drive. Doable in a day. Driving on NH44 towards Nagpur is a pleasure. See the pictures below. Map courtesy Google.

Starting early, we halted at Neredigonda for breakfast, after which we turned eastward.

Rural folks believe in protecting their homes, fields, shops etc from any evil eye. They erect an 'evil eye' at the entrance as in the roadside dhaba ढाबा (budget restaurant) below.

The road then goes past cultivated fields to enter a forest area. Forest department check post greets you. The road ends on a hill top with a Forest Rest House (FRH). One can hear the roar but can't see the waterfall from the FRH. To reach the falls, we have to hike down hill. 400 cemented steps down and then up again. After about 100 steps, three members of our team decided to halt. Their knees would not allow them to proceed. I carried on further to the bottom of the falls. It was a moderate climb down and up the hill. But the scene, the expanse, the flow and the roar of the water- were all worth it. More pictures follow.

A short video clip taken from the bottom of the Falls.

Nirmal town the district HQ of recently formed Nirmal district- has a fort called 'Chatteesgarh'.

After a leisurely lunch at Niraml, we headed back but took a slight detour west of the highway to Sriram Sagar Project.
Get a feel of the reservoir size in this short video.

Special thanks for giving the background information on Kuntala and its neighbourhood are due to Ms Praneetha Mudholkar.
