Military Passing Out Parades- Rush of Adrenaline

How do you transform a cadet into a Military officer?
How long does it take?
How do you prepare him/her to even die for his/her country?

The answer lies in the Military Academies all over the world. Irrespective of the country, a Military Training Academy prepares the young cadets to become Company Commanders and future military leaders.

Ghumakkad was in Chennai recently to witness the Passing Out Parade (POP) of the Officers Training Academy (OTA) of Indian Army. OTA trains graduate entrants for short service commission into the Army including women graduates. Having served in Indian Navy for 30 years, it was a nostalgic and moving experience. I was accompanied by Capt Sridhar- an alumnus of OTA, Ankush my son and two teenagers Dia- Sridhar's daughter and Ansh my grandson. In fact credit for organising the visit goes to Sridhar.
Pictures.

The Short Service Commission courses that passed out included Technical and non-technical streams for both men and women.
We had to be seated by 6.15 AM. Quite a tall order for two teenagers on a Sunday!

The Parade Ground is named after Maj R Parameshwaran, an alumnus of OTA who laid down his life and was awarded Param Vir Chakra the highest gallantry award posthumously.

The parade was reviewed by Lt Gen Abhay Krishna, Eastern Army Commander. A short video clip follows.

Get a glimpse of smart marching by all six Companies of OTA in the video below.

'Auld Lang Syne' the slow march played by the military band as the cadets marched to take the 'final step' brought  goose bumps.

A short video as we walked down the central vista.

Once again thanks are due to Capt Sridhar and Brig K Sampath for giving us this opportunity to watch the POP and feel the adrenaline.

My grandson Ansh helped me with this story. That is one advantage as the grandchildren grow!
