World Dance Day 2018

"Dance is not just a five letter word, it has a whole lot of feeling and meaning attached to it. It gives a tinge of happiness which has no boundary, it is and will always be the best form of expressing love, happiness and celebrations". We couldn't agree more with Sharmi Banerjee a classical dancer now pursuing a management degree. Sharmi goes on to add "Dance creates magic and fills the whole atmosphere with joy"

World Dance Day 2018 is here. We share some pictures along with the variety of dance forms which exist in India. Credit for compiling the data goes to Sharmi Banerjee.

India has a few distinct classical dance forms. Most of the classical dance forms have originated from temples, so they express the dance form in terms of worshipping. Though they have different names and the state of origin are different, but the roots can be traced from ‘Natya Shastra’ नाट्य शास्त्र.
There are several dance forms all over the world. In India every state has its own folk form. There are around 8 to 11 classical dance forms.

The Indian government's Ministry of Culture includes eleven dance forms. Scholars such as Drid Williams and others include Chhau, Yaksagana and Bhagavata Mela to the eight classical Indian dances in the Sangeet Natak Akademi list.

Few pictures of Indian classical dance forms taken by Ghumakkad with a quotation each are reproduced below:

In India, wedding time is dancing time. Few pictures depicting the joy and fervour when old and young alike take to the floor!

Younger generation loves dancing. Whether it is college functions or friends birthdays, everybody shakes a leg or two.

Dance transcends physical barriers. See the picture below where persons with disabilities performed on stage!

Dance brings people together. There are many mother-daughter duos as well as married couples who love dancing together. Two such pictures below:

Don't you agree with what Sharmi says "Dance is a way to find yourself and lose yourself, all at the same time".

Male Showstopper

Ever heard about a male showstopper? Normally showstoppers are performances by singers, super models or celebrities which attract prolonged applause. Most of the times, the showstopper is a female performer. In this case who is this male showstopper?

In the world of animals and birds, Nature has created some of the male species which are more colourful and attractive. Peacocks, flycatchers, Indian Robin and tigers- to name a few. This story is about tigers one of whom became a showstopper.
Ghumakkad is delighted to carry this guest story from Koushik Gopinath who has recently been bitten by the 'wildlife' bug! The pictures, video and the story are all by Koushik. Thank you so much Koushik for sharing. Koushik's words- Ranthambore ki kahani Koushik ki zubani- रणथम्बोर की कहानी, कौशिक की ज़ुबानी :
It is said that at 40 you definitely go through a mid-life crisis. Couldn't agree more. The anxiety to live every moment of your life seems to be making me go an extra mile to fulfill all my life's desire.

It was over a few drinks that we four friends (Dilip, Sam, Vineet and myself) decided to go to Ranthambore again within a span of a month as we didn't get a chance to see the big cat within close proximity. The tickets were booked before we could even pay the restaurant bill and we went home all excited with a hope that this time around we would be lucky.

In this excitement I ordered for a brand new Nikon D5600 with a Tamron 150-300mm zoom lens. Vineet ordered for a 70-200 Tamron for his Nikon D5500.
Our families were as confused as we were as we kept throwing them surprises. Safari, Camera, Zoom--ab aage aur kya अब आगे और क्या was the obvious question from my wife Parul. Aage ka haal break ke baad आगे का हाल ब्रेक के बाद was my reply to her.

It was a bright sunny early morning in Ranthambore on 20th April 2018 as we prepared our bags..checked our lens, battery and camera. The guide and the driver came on time at 5;45 am sharp and the news about sightings gave us a glimmer of hope.

It was Zone-6 (the whole park is divided into zones) and within five minutes of entering the park we saw Mala or Noor (T-39) enjoying the early morning sunshine near the Patwa ki baori पटवा की बावड़ी . The whole three hours (of permissible Safari time) we just followed her and she gave us some photographic moments which we shall never forget.
Take 2: The afternoon session was special as we had booked for a private free zone safari which entitled us to visit any zone of our choice. Our guide Meenaji was a two decade old hand in Ranthambore and he was joined by Lalji our driver who knew the exact positions for some perfect photographic moments.

We started with Zone-2 and in six hours we spotted six tigers, two of our sightings Sultan & Jhumru, the young tigers less than 2 year old,  were a treat to our eyes. We literally were available for their afternoon lunch, such was the proximity.

Here is a short video clip of Jhumru at a water hole. Tell us if your heartbeat picked up seeing the video.

The trip was about to end with just one wish still unfulfilled. I just said to my friend Yaar kash ek baar kabhi aisa ho ki koi tiger apni gypsy ke saamne se aae यार काश एक बार कभी ऎसा  हो कि कोई  Tiger अपनी  Gypsy के सामने  से आए ! And bingo that wish was fulfilled. Lalji shouted...Tiger in front...and we just couldn't believe our eyes...Here was Krishna a beautiful male tiger right in front of our Gypsy...we stopped, paused and stayed calm and here he was walking right in front of us.
"He was definitely a celebrity for us. YES HE WAS THE SHOWSTOPPER!"

Once again, thanks to Koushik this story is up within six days of sighting in Ranthambore!

Differentiate between Fake and Real World

"Be smart enough to differentiate between fake and real things in the world" was Amruth Charan's succinct advise to future entrepreneurs. In the ever growing space of Digital Marketing and App Development, Amruth has learnt the hard way how to survive. There are many players in the field- fake as well as real. Amruth's comment reminded me of the old idiom 'Separate the wheat from the chaff'. He goes on to add "You should have a clear idea on What To Do, When To Do and How To Do?"

Amrit Charan was a bit quiet and reserved in the class. In the team assignments, he would always be in the forefront. But when it came to taking group pictures he would seldom be seen in the front row. So much so that I could not locate a single picture of Amruth in the archives of the Class of 2016 at VVISM Hyderabad where he was my student. Even when he came to the Institute for the Alumni Meet in December last year he was his usual quiet self. In the group photograph which was taken after the event, Charan was once again standing quietly in the fifth row. See the pictures appearing later.

From that reserved personality to becoming an entrepreneur is a great transformation. Amruth Charan is the Founder and CEO of  Aresol India Pvt Ltd. Key business areas of his startup are Web Development, App Development and Digital Marketing.
Here comes Charan's story in his own words.

Can you share your journey after MBA?
After completion of my MBA, I attended many interviews and finally I joined an MNC. After some time I found that my job was not matching my ambitions. I then decided to start my own company which was my lifetime goal. So, I started working for that goal.

Has your entrepreneurial journey been as exciting as you had expected it to be?
It's been a crucial journey which made me to acquire lot many interpersonal skills to move on towards my successful career. Finally I can say yes it was more exciting journey than what I had expected. It gave me courage and confidence to face the challenges in today's competitive world.

What are the key challenges in your venture and how do you
plan to overcome it?
There are many challenges that I am facing like managing the employees, financial planning and decision making, managing client relationship etc. It's been a new kind of experience in my life to face these challenges. Some of these things I had anticipated before starting a new venture. However, I am learning to tackle these progressively. With a bit of patience I believe I can face them and move on successfully.

What is your message for present students who want to take the entrepreneurial dive?
You should have a clear idea on What To Do, When To Do and How To Do? Act accordingly. Try to be smart enough to differentiate between fake and real things in the world.
Amruth's story concludes the series titled 'Proof of the Pudding'"The proof of the pudding is in the eating" goes the old proverb. For a teacher like Ghumakkad, what is the pudding? 'Pudding' for a teacher is his/her graduating students. Then how  is this 'pudding' in the form of former students, to be 'eaten'? 'Eating' can be symbolically equated with the placements or performance of former students in real life.

This series of stories is about Ghumakkad's former students who have become entrepreneurs. Most of the 2500 or so MBA, PGDM and BBA graduates taught by me have taken up a job. By embarking on the challenging path of entrepreneurship, few of these former students have proven the proverbial pudding beyond doubt! Who are these ten entrepreneurs? Are their business ventures diverse?

Their enterprises may not be huge, but they have followed their heart. They have pursued their passion. It was such a pleasure to reconnect with these former students and to learn their success stories. Thanks are due to each one of them for sharing their journey after graduation.

The stories in 'proof of the pudding' series have been very well received by the readers. Numerous comments as well as 8000 page views convey the relevance of these stories. Although it has taken longer than initially anticipated to put all the stories together, it has been a satisfying effort. We once again we thank all the readers as well as my former-students-now-entrepreneurs who took time to share their experiences.
