Life Lessons from Madhu Malti

Madhu Malti? मधु मालती।  Names of twins? No! Then what?

It is the name of a flower which changes its colours and blooming time over the days. It is best grown outdoors in filtered sunlight. It has a mild and sweet fragrance.

In English, the Madhu Malti is known as the Chinese Honeysuckle. It is also called the Rangoon Creeper. In Telugu it is called Radha Manoharam (knowledge courtesy K Satyanarayana of Hyderabad). It is a climber which grows fast and flowers profusely. See the pictures below:

We had posted few pictures of the flowers on our social media handles, taken after a recent shower. One of the readers then researched and wrote back the following:

"The flowers change in colour with age and it is thought that this is a strategy to gather more pollinators. The flower is initially white and opens at dusk. This attracts hawkmoths with long tongues for pollination. On the second day it turns pink and on the third it turns red attracting day flying bees and birds. The flower also changes from a horizontal orientation to a drooping pose."

Thanks Anchita Nidhindra for educating us. After her feedback, we took some more pictures of the flowers and correlated it with the above observations.

Life Lessons

Like all the creations of mother Nature, Madhu Malti also has many life lessons for us. Here are a few which we have observed.

Peace: The flower initially blooms in white colour which conveys a sense of peace for all. It remains white only for a day as if to convey that 'start your day with a prayer - peace for all'.

Punctuality: The flower blooms at dusk on day one. It senses the light level every evening and starts blooming. We humans can learn a thing or two about being punctual in our day to day life!

Adaptability: We all know that change is the only constant in life. But how many of us adapt with the changing situations in life. Bereavement, ill health, work stress, job loss are many such issues which overpower us because we are unable to change our thinking or action. In contrast Madhu malti flowers constantly adapt with the change.

Team Work: Madhu Malti flowers bloom in bunches and stay together till they fall. Lesson for all of us to remain steadfast as individuals as well as when working in teams. See the video of the flowers swaying together.

Falling With Grace: Time comes for Madhu Malti flowers to fall off. It falls with grace. Lesson for all of us- when the time comes, remain graceful even when you retire or move on in life !

As we saw the tiny flowers and the tall climber has many lessons for us. That is Nature's way of teaching us, provided we are willing to learn.

Do observe the Nature around you. Pause. Observe. Feel the mysteries.

Here are the links to some of our earlier stories related to Nature.

Tree Bark As Rat Poison - read about a tree whose bark acts as a poison for the rats who eat away the roots of plants in a garden or field!

Nature's Clock - How the custard apple fruit synchronises its arrival with Diwali every year in one part of India? Like a geo-synchronous satellite, Diwali dates change every year. But the custard apple starts to ripen in the tree on dot! Read on.

Brahma Kamal A Smart Plant - Smart watch, smart cities and now a smart plant! How does it synchronise its blooming around a full moon night? Read on.

Hope our stories have triggered some inquisitiveness about Nature in you. Do share your observations of the world around you!

We close with a picturesque quote (PQ) by Lady Bird Johnson who said 'Where flowers bloom so does hope!'

Six & Nine Sixty Nine

Six and Nine, Sixty Nine.

That is how the Tambola caller announces the number 69!

She loves playing Tambola, though may not be winning every time! So what?

She loves eating out, as the picture shows.

She loves being with friends.

She loves her plants and the garden.

She loves online shopping. Offline too!

She loves eating mangoes! Who doesn't?

She loves sleeping late. And getting up later!

She loves all animals. And human beings too!

We love her for what she is!

Who is she?

She is the balancing weight of my life.

If I like crisp chappatis, she likes them soft.

If I like lauki, she loves her aaloo.

If I want my AC at medium, she wants to actually chill!

If I like my greens, she loves her whites.

If I relish palak-ki-daal, she devours her arhar-ki-daal and chawal.

If I choose an aisle, she wants her window.

If I chose white, she would select black. But not always, as the picture below shows!

This is God's way of keeping the balance in life. A balance which has seen us through the last 47 years! Without balance, even the largest of the boats will topple.

It is the 69th birthday today of my life's balance. Join us in wishing Neeta a very happy birthday.

Those who missed it earlier, read what we wrote on her 63rd birthday in 2017. It was titled 'Spouse's Birthday is Special'. It continues to be special.

May she continue to bring cheer into many lives.

God bless Neeta/Beigs/Mom/Dadi/Nani/Bhabhi/Jiji/Bhua/Taiji/Mami

Ghumakkad Is Eleven!

Eleventh birthday! Not mine but of our blog, your blog! (www.ghumakkadhb.blogspot.com)

As Ghumakkad's blog completes 11 years, it is a moment of joy, thrill and excitement. Like the Baya Weavers in the picture below who go about building their nests from scratch. Patiently but steadily. Suspended up in the air but held firmly with a branch of the tree. Our blog is also somewhere up in the 'cloud' but bonded securely with you, the readers!

Thanks for being there to support Ghumakkad all these years.

The Journey

Ghumakkad started as a travel blog. Our inaugural story was a set of eight posts on picturesque Bhutan. Initially the blog was by invitation . See the graph below which shows the current page views at 291,000 with more than 3900 comments. This is the 582nd Post of our blog.

The Content

Our blog has a variety of content with pictures. Some of the themes are listed below with links to connected stories:

  • Motivational posts specially during Covid

Commander GR Sreenivasan, a reader from Bangalore wrote: "Fabulous compilation of unique and interesting  information mostly related to nature and wild life, meticulously  compiled and recorded for the benefit of present and future generations when many things will either become extinct or degraded due to climate change. What a way to celebrate, worship and express gratitude to the creator of this universe." (We hope that mankind doesn't degrade the environment to that extent- Eds.)

White Jamun

Ever seen a white jamun?

Even I hadn't seen till yesterday. Grown in a friend's farm 30 kms north of Secunderabad, it resembles the normal black jamun in shape, size and taste. White jamun is slightly sweeter and its tree is shorter in height. The leaves are a bit broader. Its scientific name is Syzygium cumini. Black jamun is also called Indian Blackberry.

It grows in SE Asia but not as common as the black jamun. Like the black jamun, it is good for diabetic patients. White jamun has a higher amount of pectin, which is good for lowering the cholesterol. Few readers after seeing the initial pictures commented it as 'eggs hanging from a tree'! But the white jamun is much smaller than an egg.

The farm had only ten trees of white jamun, The farm is basically a mango orchard with close to 4000 mango trees spread over 8 acres. See the pictures and a short video clip below which also shows the rain water harvesting. In one season, the water table has risen considerably.

It is always a treat to visit a farm. It was a pleasure planting two saplings before leaving. Thanks Devendar Ahuja for this privilege.

Some of our previous stories on mangoes, guavas, trees and plants are listed below. Just click to browse.

Learning Patience from Nature

Hope you enjoyed the story of White Jamun.

We end with a quote by Claude Monet, the famous painter, who loved Nature. We have superimposed his line "My wish is to stay always like this, living quietly in the corner of Nature" on one of our pictures taken at the farm.
