Tree Bark as Rat Poison

Nature's many mysteries.
Like the bark and seeds of a particular tree which act as a rat poison! Amazing isn't it?
We are talking about Gliricidia Sepium, a tree native to Mexico and South America. That is why the common name Mexican Lilac. It is now grown in tropics and India too!
In Secunderabad where Ghumakkad photographed this tree, it flowers in end-January to early March depending on the day temperatures. It blooms when day temperature touches 29-30 degrees celsius. The tree is used for live fencing and intercropping. It lines some of the fairways in our golf course. Its bark and seeds act as rat poison and prevents rodents from attacking the crops nearby.

We had carried the pictures of Gliricidia Sepium in our Nature Quiz No. 5 which was the precursor to Kaun Banega Ghumakkad (KBG). However, there was not a single correct answer received.

So, this year when I saw the flowers again in the golf course, I couldn't restrain myself from taking few more pictures. See the flowers in full bloom on a branch with no leaves! Different shades of pink, mauve and white- so soothing to the eye.

Once again, special thanks to Dr Chitra Shanker for her continued research support. Without her KBG wouldn't have taken off!

Be on the lookout for KBG-28 coming soon!
